The ICC will equalize prize money for the Women’s T20 World. In a historic announcement on Tuesday (September 17), the International Cricket Council (ICC) said that the prize money for the women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the same as that given to the men’s champions earlier in the year. At the ICC’s annual summit in July, a decision was made.
The event will occur in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the victors will take home USD 2.34 million. This is a remarkable 134% increase over the USD 1 million that Australia was given when they won their sixth championship in South Africa in 2023. Similarly, the runners-up will now receive USD 1.17 million, a 134% increase over the USD 500,000 South Africa received for making it to their first-ever home final.
The overall prize fund will now equal USD 7,958,080, a boost of 225% over the previous edition’s total of USD 2.45 million. The two losing semi-finalists will now each get USD 675,000 (up from USD 210,000 in 2023).As a result, over seven years ahead of the governing body’s initial 2030 timetable, the ninth Women’s T20 World Cup is the first ever tournament in ICC history to achieve prize money equity.
According to an ICC statement, this action is consistent with the organization’s plan to give the women’s game top priority and accelerate its growth by 2032. Teams will now be awarded the same amount of money for winning a match in similar tournaments as well as for finishing in the same place at those events. The prize money for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 tournament is only increased since 32 more matches and 10 more teams are competing.
The October 5 doubleheader in Sharjah will now have Australia playing Sri Lanka in the afternoon and Bangladesh playing England in the evening, according to a minor scheduling change issued by the ICC.
