The third day of the one-off Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand was called off due to rain and the condition of the outfield at Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground. As early as 9.15 am, play was called off.
There is little possibility of a result in this first-ever Test between these two sides, as there was no playable cricket on any of the first two days and the toss has not yet taken place.
The rain that fell last night for two to three hours and again on Wednesday morning starting at approximately seven in the morning caused umpires Sharfuddoula and Kumar Dharmasena to cancel the match the day before it was supposed to begin at nine thirty.
The forecast for not only today but maybe the entire five days of the Test match is rather dire, according to the broadcasters. The site selection and its ability to weather-proof have come under fire, but Menhajuddin Raz, the cricket manager for the Afghanistan Cricket Board, stated in a message on the third morning that there is no one to blame and that the situation is simply very unfortunate.
The last time three or more days of a Test were abandoned was in 2016, during New Zealand’s match against South Africa in Durban. The first three days of a test were abandoned in 2008, when Bangladesh hosted New Zealand in Mirpur. This Greater Noida Test might become one of the seven that have been called off without a ball being thrown, with 1998 being the most recent example.
Afghanistan has only played 10 games after being granted Test status in 2017. The one-off Test serves as the catalyst for New Zealand’s subcontinental tour, which will see them play three Tests in India and two in Sri Lanka. This match is not included in the World Test Championship, unlike the other five.
